Is MetroPCS a good phone carrier?
Being a discount provider of cellular services, Metro Pcs is one of the most popular carriers in US. If you’re fine with purchasing their devices and using it exclusively with their network then it makes a lot of sense for customers on a budget. Unlimited plans start at just $40 per month and provide customers with access to unlimited data over a nationwide 5G and 4G LTE network.
MetroPcs pitfall
But what if you’ve broken your own device or need to switch to another phone or you want to bring your own unlocked device and activate on their network? You should be prepared for red tape at your local store. The best way to switch your device is to call Metro Pcs customer service or go online, this is better than going to your local Metro Pcs store. They can charge you at least $25 up and the employee’s in the local store do everything they can to make you believe it won’t work on their network. Even if you know that the device is 100% unlocked and works!
By bringing your device to the store, the store is missing out on selling you their inventory of phones. Which means no sale, no commission, and for you, no dice. Don’t be surprised if they tell you it won’t work, or it’s not unlocked, or they don’t support that model, etc… This practice is dishonest and largely goes unpunished. The customer either caves in and does what they’re told or they call customer service and go through the process all over again.
So, if you’re planning on bringing your device to a Metro Pcs store to activate it, think twice, you’ll have much better options calling the customer service department directly

Tip for adding a new device for Metro
If you’re familiar with the Metro app, you have access to your account. If you are replacing a device with another, you can edit the imei number of the old device in your account. The imei is the identification number the carrier needs to activate it. By editing the old imei with new one you can bypass paying Metro. Once the new imei is updated, you just need to contact Metro and ask them to reset it. This is necessary, otherwise it will never update in their system.
